The Sociology of UFOlogy – an inquiry with Dr. Jeffrey Mishlove

Sociology of UFOlogy

For decades people have been curious and investigated UFOs in myriad ways. What is the sociology of UFOlogy today? In the late 80s Tim Beckley introduced New Age and Alien Agenda gatherings around the country. The International UFO Congress began in Tucson in 1991 with Ret. Col. Wendelle Stevens, Jim Diletosso and Ken Liljegren’s team as support.

I’ll digress for a moment. My first experiences with non-human intelligence was in 1962, advancing to something different in 1965 which was apparently the ‘normal’ type of contact in the Midwest in the 50s and 60s, the orange cigar-shaped cloud. During that same period, UFOs were apparently shutting down ICBM silos around the globe with exquisite showmanship.

Curious and investigative, I continued my quest to know, not just what, how this kinda stuff happens. I love the high strangeness. What makes it tick? I had a lot of questions, numerous events and some experiences I still wonder about today. I had deep conversations with a lot of folks; experts, researchers and experiencers across the gamut.

I got to know Tim and Wendelle over the years. Jim and I became friends and later he recommended me as manager for The Prophets Conference (1997). It gave me an opportunity to have conversations that are extremely rare, up close and personal without interruption. Some of the folks who were there: Dr. Edgar Mitchell, Dr. Steven Greer, Jose Arguelles, David Icke, Linda Molten-Howe, Stanton Friedman, Zacharia Sitchen and 2 dozen more. I got to know many prominent folks in the field of UFOlogy many years ago, with friendships still today.

2010 began by assuming responsibility for a UFO discussion group in the Phoenix valley. We met in a community room of a local fire station. Our guest speakers included Claude Swanson, Travis Walton, Alejandro Rojas and more. We also had meditation experiments using music that produced some varied and amazing personal experiences, all of a contact nature. There were about 35 people in the room. Afterward, one elderly woman reported seeing massive ET machinery surrounding the group and ‘working’ on each person.

From 2010 to 2014 I was a vendor at the IUFOC, having moved to Ft. McDowell in Arizona. In 2013 we debuted UFOlogyPRSS.com at the International UFO Congress, with over 100 blogs from around the world in one place, up-to-the-moment material. It rose the bar for UFOlogy-based websites. It was our virtual model of folks getting along even if they had opposing views. We’ve also got a number of authors featured; podcasts and radio shows, too.

Meanwhile, UFOlogy in general seems to be challenged. Experiencers are on one side and the nuts and bolts scientists on the other with conspiratorialists scattered about in each camp. Dr. Mishlove and I take a frank and open look at what the Sociology of UFOlogy is today. Although challenges do exist, there seems to be a call for change. What that will be remains to be seen.

Here’s how Dr. Mishlove framed the interview, “Here he [Zen] speaks as a participant-observer sharing his reflections on the current community of interest centering on UFO phenomena. He describes his disillusionment with a nexus of individuals focusing on the notions of the Ashtar Command and the Galactic Federation. He describes various fears associated with the very idea of alien life forms. However, he suggests that we presently have no actual evidence that there is a reason to be fearful of UFO activity.”

In the ‘contact’ scenarios, experiencers have to deal with seemingly incredulous events and still continue with some kind of ‘normal’ life. Whether individual or family needs, the daily functional activity still needs doing. There is something else going on, though, as shows like this don’t happen if the conversation isn’t necessary, imho.

Our hopes were to address common concerns and explore a little of what else is happening. I was a willing participant in spite of my trepidation. Talking about the Ashtar Command and Galactic Federation, however real and true they may be, is not the kind of talk that garners credibility normally. There’s evidence they do exist dating back to 1952 with George Van Tassel.

Although we discussed the potential confusion with deities, there is still more confusion around the topic. George Van Tassel met Robert Short, who took on the ‘Ashtar Command’ label, used it for contrary purposes and wasn’t connected to the ‘source’ like George. I met Bob in the late 1980s and didn’t feel he had a good connection, if any, talking nonsense about conspiracy theories interwoven with an Ashtar Command that would somehow take action against the cabal. The latter was infectious and unfortunately obfuscates the truth still, imho.

Jeffrey made a delicate subject easy to discuss. We had a nice mind flight. Perhaps you’ll consider sharing this article and video.

More importantly share New Thinking Allowed. Thanks in advance.

My wife asked me to include this interview from January of 2013. She said it spoke to her in ways nothing else had. She’s Russian-born and trained pianist as well as a 3HO Kundalini Yoga teacher. She has a compelling argument…

A New World Order – Thoughts on New Thinking Allowed

A New World Order – New Thinking Allowed

I had a dream come true this last weekend, a conversation with Dr. Jeffrey Mishlove. How it came about was as synchronistic as it could be and the added bonus of actually being interviewed by him for New Thinking Allowed (three episodes) was certainly icing on the cake. I’m so grateful for the opportunity.

Most of you I’m sure are aware that my life is ‘themed’ with the idea of harmony among people and planet – a true ‘new world order.’ Well, we explored that very topic…

Would love your comments and sharing with friends and networks. Jeffrey thought this is a timely conversation. Thanks in advance for your likes, shares and comments.

It was really a pleasure, full of excitement and trepidation. To feel vulnerable enough to share this kind of stuff, and to be invited by the premiere host of our time, is a most humbling experience. I neglected to explore ‘facilitate’ to make it clear I do not feel like I am ‘The One’ which is often a mistaken perspective people take.

A New World Order isn’t about dominance and submission in any traditional sense, nothing to fear in other words. What is of primary importance is that each individual discovery their true form, fit and function in this world; a true new world order naturally emerges from that process. It is not without chaos or conflict. In fact, the transformation of it is how the new order emerges.

Those areas of chaos and conflict hold the key and asking the right questions, beginning with “Why?” and followed by “How?” lead us to discoveries beyond our imagination in most cases. I wrote a piece about the event that resides on MothershipCafe.com if you are interested in my considerations.

Jeffrey did a follow-up supportive video about a gentleman we both admire, Donald Fraser Keys. Jeff knew him well. I have modeled PlanetaryCitizens.net based on his initial work, along with a mentor of mine, Khigh Alex Dheigh. He was involved with the promotion of world citizenship. Khigh is featured in a video there reading a world citizen credo. It’s worthy of attention. Some of you might recognize him from the Manchurian Candidate or Wo Fat on Hawaii Five-0.

Whether or not our perception of ‘scheduled events’ is a coping strategy for high strangeness or indeed an attempt to become more visible, it is obvious there is a massive infrastructure of communication networks buried in our consciousness. Some tap into it for greater or lesser periods. Its nature of being ‘out of time’ as a non-linear and even non-local series of events give us cause to explore the phenomena further, but how?

Perhaps the idea of discovering our true form, fit and function leads us in the right direction. We already know the universe has impeccable math contained within it. Why wouldn’t we as well? I think I might have a way to at least begin to discern the process, if one is asking the questions, of course.

Oftentimes one would notice an increase in what I like to call ‘tangential’ thinking; darting about the mind’s field of available information and having fleeting thoughts that lead to others in a seemingly disjointed fashion. These same events in consciousness also happen in conversations where the subject matter seems to change on a dime and tracking the points might be challenging to observers as well as the participants at times. The latter promotes deep friendships from my experience.

Recognizing this processing system, a pattern of thinking if you will, often contains the hints to accessing one’s form, fit and function. If we are observant enough, patterns of opportunity to engage the present present themselves in a variety of ways. Being aware of the tangential, we look for congruent or repetitive aspects that show up in our lives in practical and pragmatic ways; a prudent path or multiple sequential ones are often revealed. Simply, what shows up in front of us that we can see needs to be done is often the direction our discovery takes.

As patterns connect and evolve we begin to see how our specific skill set, or at least a gut feeling we recognize, leads to noticing specific and synchronistic events unfolding around us. What do we do then? This is where our choices affect the flow. In the event of ascertaining ‘flow,’ we get a sense of ‘yes’ without the slightest hesitation. All others are suspect and may need further analysis.

The nature of universal flow includes the multidimensional mathematical models of Neppe & Close, Hawkings and others, it would seem. The manifestation of events congruent with such laws of the universe produce a sense of harmony or even bliss in the individual experience, sometimes even group experiences. Humans haven’t been in touch with that in their climb to dominance in the world. Stewardship has been lacking.

The need for stewardship is the essence of the ‘message’ from those ‘with’ the Galactic Federation as well. The mathematical models turn into experiential events internally, sometimes even externally, as recognition of certain patterns that produce serendipitous moments. Speculative as it may be, we have the opportunity to explore it as an aspect of consciousness manifesting in form, fit and function on scales currently incomprehensible.

The Old Word Order, a paradigm of command and control, even though it has been masqueraded as a New World Order, cannot compare to the scope and sequence of what is to come. Planetary or World Citizens by nature, still defined by so many names and titles in the world now, can sense a change coming and feel the need to support it. Many just aren’t sure how, yet.

Perhaps this natural evolution is what frightened the ruling families who’ve managed the mayhem throughout history by instilling a fear of a unified world through whatever means available. They think it means they will lose power, and maybe how they’ve viewed their power and its influence will cease. What emerges will be far more powerful in the sharing of resources, environmentally-friendly industrial processes, alternative energy distribution, even reassignment of military functionality as guaranteed supply chains and support systems for the shift.

These notions are worth consideration and perhaps they will find favor in reading. I hope so.

Robert Bigelow presents an Opportunity of a Lifetime

What do we really know in a lifetime?

Robert Bigelow presents an Opportunity of a Lifetime. This is very significant to demonstrate the seriousness of the subject. An independent researcher, a billionaire in fact, might have some answers to the questions many have about the ET presence on Earth. That isn’t to say go watch GaiaTV’s episode. It’s more than that. It’s an opportunity of a lifetime for us, potentially.

Opportunity of a Lifetime

It would seem, through deductive logic even, that perhaps this presence and our willingness to engage it might provide answers to the problems we face as a planetary civilization and offer solutions for sustainability. Certainly these advanced intelligences have weathered many storms, perhaps thousands or even millions of years ago.

Can we move beyond the past paradigms and prejudicial biases, the fears of the unknown, toward some unified front in learning how to get along and work together for the good of all? We’ve still got plenty of outliers who are determined to control and dominate populations, with many others warning us of the potential of ETs wanting to do the same.

The reality is that dominant cultures in human history have been controlled by a few elites. Many of the existing systems on Earth appear to be in the same situation currently. Humans tend to project their barbaric history upon other cultures that may or may not adhere to their beliefs. Do they make it so simply by believing or is there a possibility that the belief systems are completely wrong?

When one clears out the cobwebs in their consciousness and resides in the place of no fear, willing to expose themselves to the truth… what’s there? Is it what we’ve called ‘love’ or a freedom unsurpassed in our experience of life? Is it a sense of unity of all things, including whatever intelligence we are perceiving in the moment? Would that lead to harmony among people and planet or the destruction of our world?

Emergence And The Quest For Extraterrestrial Understanding

Is the underlying phenomena that drive UFOlogy an emergent phenomenon? Is it created from singular parts with an illusion of a whole? Is it only real when looked at from a certain perspective? Is something in our common human experience now exerting new experiences and phenomena?

Is the source of all those fantastical UFO sightings off world vehicular constructions of a type unknown. Or is it more ephemeral, more ethereal, and all too human of a thing? Must consciousness be considered? What does that even mean?

We are in dark territory surrounded by black water on this one.

To describe an emergent phenomenon, we must assume that emergent phenomena exist objectively, which in the case of UFOlogy is a foregone conclusion. Mathematics and the logic that flows from it are key. When we say that a phenomenon is emergent, what we really mean (without knowing it) is that a phenomenon is emergent within some perceptual modality or experience. Without perception, a map or scope of some set of information is simply another set of information. Nothing ’emerges’, there is only data compression. No labeling scheme requires that we resort to extra-mathematical ’emergent’ properties just because such properties seem to accomplish labeling so efficiently in hindsight.

When we run a query on a database and return a row of data, we would not consider the sum of that data to be a macrostate which has emerged from microstates. To ’emerge’ we would need to invoke some kind of phenomenal sensory quality, such as a visual graph. Even then, it would only seem emergent if the graph appeared automatically like a chemical precipitate from the data. In reality what allows us to see an image based on data in a computer is not any software or math, it is not a computation at all, but rather a physical transduction from semiconductor to optical physics to neurochemistry to phenomenology. We can see, for instance, how a bunch of ball bearings would have the emergent phenomena similar to a lubricant, but no matter what scale monochrome pixels are viewed at, no color would emerge. The brain as a whole is on a different scale than neurons or ion channels, but no scale is any more logically likely to precipitate a feeling or flavor than any other.

For this reason, Emergence should not be considered an objective feature to be described by mathematics or logic, but rather it is an aesthetic feature which is grounded in awareness. Emergence is not coupled to some disembodied parameter called ‘scope’, instead, it is the direct presentation of the scoping qualities of consciousness which gives the impression of emergence. It may be more of a ‘divergence’ than an Emergence, as our senses may serve to filter out experiential phenomena subtractively as much as they construct sensations from physical microstates. Macrostates are no less real than microstates, and both are emergent ‘scopes’ within consciousness.

We Are Forever Disjointed. The map is not the territory.

Count Alfred Korzybski used this Structural Differential (image) to drive home his point that the map of a territory is not the territory. His book: Science and Sanity: An Introduction to Non-Aristotelian Systems and General Semantics drove the point home with a vengeance. At an early age, his book introduced me to the semantic confusion that results when abstractions are confused with their associated physical objects.

Mathematical models of phenomena never replicate all of the features of the physical manifestation of the phenomena. Models select a subset of the observables of the phenomena and approximate their quantitative relationships. Endless arguments could be avoided except for confusion about the reality of these abstractions.

Phenomena itself is directly unreachable because whatever the phenomenon is, we can only access it by what it does. This includes observations, sounds, and even mathematical models. But the conglomerate of these expressions, both physical and symbolic, results in something we can circle and point to, that we can name and refer to, and then call upon to remember and think about.

All evidence is an expression. All expression is potential evidence.

To be less abstract:

We see something because it does what it needs to be seen. It emits or reflects photons.

We hear something because it does what it needs to be heard. It shakes and generates sound waves.

We feel something because it does what it needs to be felt. It carries weight.

And similarly,

We model something because it behaves in ways that can be mathematically modeled. It carries logical consistency.
Phenomena are the expressions of evidence with mathematical expressions being no exception.

The best we can do is rank expressions by their abstractness and their distances from their source. Math is more abstract than direct observation. But there is always a distance. Hence, they are equated, if for the only reason that they never meet. From molecules to atoms to quarks to strings, every time we overcome this distance, we have discovered something else. What’s more, different realities exist at every scale.

Discovering new worlds in pursuit of the core of our own is a feat, but then what does that make our reality? What does that make the conglomerate of all phenomena? An expression. It’s all one giant expression, and there is no is, there is only does.

Instead of using the term explaining phenomena, let’s exchange that with the term modeling phenomena. Because mathematics in itself doesn’t explain anything. It is language.

Mathematics is the most fundamental variety of truth. It comes before scientific truth (discovered empirically), before social truth (the facts about how we behave to each other and what myths we choose to believe), and way ahead of political truth (as in “The great leader is always correct.”). And here’s a shocking was to think about this. The statement “1 + 2 = 3” is true whether or not there is a God, and also true whether or not there are humans to think about it.

This is important to note. Mathematics is a language. But there are some fundamental differences between it and other non-mathematical languages. The most important one is the near lack of any ambiguity. Language often has words, phrases, etc. that can have many meanings in many different languages and those meanings are contextual.

The question is: How much of a message do I need to understand the message’s contents with no ambiguity?

In normal human languages, this could be a very long message to extract an exact meaning (longer than the message itself) and by increasing the complexity through increasing the length of the message (over-describe something) it can build in even more ambiguity (it is often not even possible to check to see if you got a meaning right). This concept can be illustrated with the current wave of dank-deconstructionist-ironic memes going around.

Mathematics is also a very compact language.

Because of the lack of ambiguity and compactness, mathematics is amazing to model all kinds of phenomena.

Even better, when dealing with the physical world, a model can be made where the error of collecting the data to create the model is observed and passed along to the model. This is very important in any science. A scientific fact is one where the observation (data) is assumed to have an error instead of just assuming something is right or wrong (which is what humans naturally do; seeing is believing). In other words: The burden of truth lies on the data collected and can be statistically measured. However, if someone tells someone else a statement, the burden of truth often lies with a person choosing to believe indirect observations “at face value”.

I humbly think that if the world had a better grasp on this, we could avoid many conflicts. Beliefs are fluid, they aren’t absolute in truthfulness. They can fall on a degree of truth, but humans often don’t see it that way. Belief is often not open to rational criticism nor is it updated to incorporate new observations. But scientific facts and mathematical models are known to improve as new observations are made, and that is the whole point. Finding a better model.

We will eventually find a reasonably accurate yet eternally incomplete model of what we call “UFO’s”. We will someday have the clarity of unambiguity in UFOlogy. It will take time. Frankly, I do not believe humans have even remotely come close to understanding what they seek. Let alone know how to ask the right questions to create a valid line of inquiry. We are just the dominant primate life on this planet. We dream of adequateness and worthiness of the delusions we tell ourselves. The Universe has no obligation to make sense to you.

Whether they come from inner space or outer space may not ultimately matter. The source of this phenomena will undoubtedly be more bizarre and unsettling than we can currently imagine. As the fleeting spark of humanity slowly evolves, the search and quest for truth may be our ultimate reward.

Formal UFO Disclosure – The Big D coming soon?

Transparency is a buzz word being thrown around without much reality, yet we can speak our feelings and thoughts openly, right? Do we? Usually not, for fear of something. What?

Truth telling begins with an individual effort, an example that invites others to do the same. We haven’t been able to do that, yet. If we do that, then we can create an opening for others to do so. If we aren’t, then we cannot hope for others to do so.

ufo disclosure

What about beginning with the notion that there are no malevolent beings from elsewhere? If there were, we’d be living differently. We have a tremendous amount of freedom, yet there are some humans that are inhumane. Just like the excuses many religious folk use… the devil made me do it. No, it was a choice you made. Evil aliens are influencing our world? No, it is our choice to allow the conditions to exist.

There really does come a time that we must stand for something. Let’s stand for Truth! Now, what does that really mean? Even though we are taught that within the silence is the voice of being, how often to we go there to really listen? Even thought we know that consciousness is replete with harmony, how often do we strive to be examples of it?

Initial attempts at open contact and a willingness to share technology were met with deceit and reverse engineering for military purposes. If someone is going to show you who they are by such activity, believe them. In the game of life, you get one chance. If you have the keys given to you and screw it up, why should you have another?

We really don’t take things seriously here, except to carve out our own little niches and protect our secrets so we can have a nice life. We believe there is an omnipotent all-loving universe yet we act completely the opposite. Giorgio Piacenza is right, it is all about consciousness. What does that mean, though? Can it be studied empirically? Doubtful, yet it is replete with numbers, patterns and symbols.

Authority and conviction can be felt at the deepest levels of our being, in our gut. This is the center of indigenous consciousness, the intuition or connectedness we can feel with everything. Emerson once wrote, “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” The question is, “Why lie?”

‘Are we ready for a formal Big D?’ We can’t handle a little d yet, imho.
